Announcing The First, and Probably Only, Jane Austen Read All A-long

A few weeks ago I asked if anyone would be interested in reading all six of Jane Austen’s novels as a sort of read-a-long.  I’ve been thinking about doing this for a few months, collecting paperback editions of all six novels.

Since I stick to used paperbacks and insist on editions with cool covers, it’s taken a few months to come up with all six, but I’ve done it.

So I’m going to begin reading them all, one per month, in order of publication starting July first.

Care to join in the fun?

The schedule will be as follows:

  1. July: Sense and Sensibility
  2. August: Pride and Prejudice
  3. September: Mansfield Park
  4. October: Emma
  5. November: Northanger Abbey
  6. December: Persuasion

I might even go ahead and read the final, unfinished novel Lady Susan which Tom at Amateur Reader speaks very highly of.

This will be a very informal Read All A-long.  If you’d like to join in for all or part let me know in a comment.  I’ll put together a list of everyone with links to your sites if you have one.  You can come back here and post links to any reviews or other posts you write. I’ll try to keep a running list of reviews so we can all see what everyone has to say.

So whether your read Jane Austen every year like a true Janeite or have never read her before, consider joining The Jane Austen Read All A-long.

  1. I re-read Jane now and again, but not systematically or in batches. Next up for me is Persuasion. I guess that means I’ll join along in December.

    1. The only one I”ve never read is Northanger Abby. I will admit, I’m dreading Mansfield Park a little, but I’m willing to give it another try. Welcome aboard.

  3. Lady Susan is actually an early novel – and is more or less finished. Sanditon is the late unfinished one, but not readily available. I used to reread all of the six novels every single year from when I was about 16 until I was about 30. And I’m finding myself itching to do it again, so I might join you.

    1. I was working from a list of publication dates. I did not see Sanditon on the list. We’ll have to see what our mood is on January. I’m only committing to the six finished novels at this point.

      1. Yes, neither Lady Susan nor Sanditon were published during her life-time. To be honest, it’s the six completed novels which deserve rereading – the others are more for hard-core fans.

  6. I will be joining in for Pride and Prejudice, Northanger Abbey, and Emma. I am TracyK at Bitter Tea and Mystery. I cannot add a link because my comments don’t show up when I include an URL (at most WordPress sites).

  8. Oh, what fun! I don’t know that I’ll join in, but I will keep it in mind. I’ve read all 6 at least twice, except for Mansfield Park. I’ll especially think about joining in for that one.

    1. Mansfield Park was the first Austen I read, back in my undergraduate days. To be honest, I’m kind of dreading it a little. But I’m looking forward to all of the others.

  9. I’ve read them all (Northanger Abbey and P&P multiple times), but will try to join in for one or two… am considering Sense and Sensibility, Mansfield Park, and Persuasion.

  10. I’m in! Although, I just read Persuasion last year so I’m not sure I’m ready to re-read it, yet, but we’ll see when we get to December. I’ll re-read Pride and Prejudice in August as its been a long time since I read it. Looking forward to this!

    1. Welcome aboard. Persuasion had moments that knocked my socks off the first time around. I’m wondering how I’ll feel about them now that I know what happens. It’s a re-read for me.
