Countdown City by Ben H. Winters

countdown cityI don’t have anything deep to say about the second in Ben H. Winters’ series of apocalyptic detective novels, Countdown City.  I just really enjoyed it.

I could end my review there, that would be something, but I’ll say a little more.

The premise is that there is an asteroid heading for earth.  There’s nothing to be done to prevent it, which is explained away in the first novel, so everyone knows the exact moment when and where the disaster will take place.  In the meantime, society slowly breaks down, until the water stops running when things quickly turn very, very bad.

In the meantime, former policeman who never got to be a detective, Henry Palace, is still trying to do real police work.  In this case, a missing person.  Henry’s investigation takes him to both utopian and dystopian groups each trying to make it to the end of the world, maybe even beyond.  Who knows if humanity will be able to survive once the asteroid hits, but there’s a chance.

And a third book, which I hope is just as much fun as the first two have been.

  1. I really enjoyed this series. All I will say about the third, and final, book, James, is that you won’t be disappointed in it. It is equally as well written as the first two Last Policeman books.

  2. I enjoyed this trilogy too. The third book is just as good and answers the questions left hanging from the first two books.

  3. I had the same problem with Countdown City and the third book. Hard to review but loved both of them. I read both of them fairly close together. Saved the 2nd one until I could do that.
