I haven’t done one of these meme things in a very long time, but I saw this quick little one over at Dolce Belleza (which has a cool new design by the way) and thought it would be fun for a Sunday morning.
Using Random.org, you select one letter and then list a couple of favorites starting with that letter. I didn’t read the details well enough to see that I was supposed to ask Belleza to get a letter for me, so I did my own at random.org just now and got ‘z’.
Serves me right for not following the rules.
‘X’ is probably the most difficult letter, which is cold comfort, but I’ll give ‘z’ a go.
Favorite book with the letter ‘z’: Zeroville by Steve Erickson. This was an easy one, actually. Zeroville knocked my socks off when I read it for my old blog Ready When You Are, C.B. My review is here. This is the book that got me reading Europa Editions.
Favorite author with the letter ‘z’: Carlos Ruiz Zafón . You thought I was going to say Émile Zola, right. I don’t have a mind that can come up with all the authors I’ve read by letter, so I went to the go to source for all information….Wikipedia, which has a list of authors whose names start with ‘z’. Turns out there are quite a few who I like: Paul Zindel, Roger Zelazny, Markus Zusak, and Yevgeny Zamyatin.
Favorite song with the letter ‘z’: Zoot Suit Riot by Cherry Poppin’ Daddies with honorable mention to David Bowie’s Ziggy Stardust.
Favorite film starting with ‘z’: Zentropa (Europa). My other choice was Zelig, but at this point the less obnoxious director is Lars Von Triers (Zentropa). It’s going to be a while before I can watch a Woody Allen film again.
Favorite Object starting with ‘z’: zucchini bread.
That’s mine. If you want to play along, and play by the rules, then you’re supposed to ask for a letter in a comment and I’m supposed to assign one to you. I can do that, or you can visit Random.org. Please let me know if you do.
Happy Sunday reading….
Ok, I’ll play. Please assign me a letter James.
You letter is ‘H’. I think that should be a good one. Please let me know when you post. Thanks.
This is fun! I just got a letter from Audrey and will play tomorrow. Zola would be the obvious choice for me, but leave it to Wikipedia to provide alternatives 🙂
There were a lot of alphabet lists out there, more than Wikipedia. There are so many people who enjoy lists on the internet.
I know why you didn’t read the fine print on my blog; it was too hard to see! 😉
I have read Emile Zola for Paris in July during years past, but all I read was his novel Therese Racquin. It was fabulous, and I should read more if him. But, Carlos Ruiz Zafon would be perfect for Spanish Lit Month also this July. Thanks for the reminder!
The other “z” things you mentioned are totally new to me, except for zucchini bread. I’m really awful about knowing music and film.
I’m amazed how beautifully you fulfilled the responses to this meme, I suspect I struggled a lot more. Thanks for playing along, I liked reading your ideas.
I bet Wikipedia has a list of Spanish authors…. 😉
Mmmm Zucchini bread. I still haven’t forgiven Starbucks for getting rid of their zucchini loaf all those years ago. Z is a tough letter though I agree that X is much more difficult. I just read AJ Fikry by Gabrielle Zevin–that was a fun book. Light, perfect for summer. I haven’t read any books that either start with X or have an X author.
Sure, I’ll take a stab at it…depending on what you assign me. 😛
Trish, you were assigned ‘I’. Have fun.
I have been reading a good bit of Zola lately.
If your looking for another Z read – you could do worse then The Leisure Seeker or Seconf Hand by Michael Zadoorian. Loved both especially the first though.
Great job with Z! I originally got that letter (from Simon of Stuck in a Book, who started this meme) but then he gave me O as a second choice. Which is good, because I haven’t read/seen any of your choices and I really didn’t want to pick Zorba the Greek.
